I get a lot of compliments about how long my eye lashes are and I get asked even more what type of mascara I use. The truth is I use THREE different types of mascaras and I have several techniques that I use to add to the length of my lashes and create volume! This brings me to Mascara 101. Keep reading and you will get all my secrets to lashes with length and volume!
Step 1
I start with applying one liberal coat of Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara on my top lashes only, by starting at the root and moving the wand to the top of my lash in sweeping motions. I also take the very tip of the mascara wand and brush from root to end on the outside lashes, helping to add length and separate. For this first coat, I only dip back into the tube for more product when I am moving between eyes.
I realize the Lancome mascara is pricey, but it honestly takes around three months to use up the whole tube, which is the maximum time you should keep a mascara anyways! It is the only mascara I found to give me fuller longer lashes during pregnancy when I experienced a stunt in my hair growth. (L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Mascara is my favorite drug store mascara, if you want to try that first!)
Step 2
I then move to applying MAC’s Extended Play Gigablack Mascara to my bottom lashes using wiggling motions starting at the root and then pulling the brush to the ends slowly. I apply two coats to each eye and then go back with a final coat adding mascara to the very ends of my lashes- this is what helps add so much length. This mascara is perfect for the bottom lashes because it has a very small brush that helps separate and lengthen the lashes! It also lasts forever- I have to throw it away before it is empty!
Step 3
Next, I move back to my top lashes. Adding a second coat of the Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara using wiggling motions starting at the base and moving to the ends. Without dipping back into the tube, I continue brushing mascara from the root to the ends and as I am doing so, I shut my eye slowly in order to lift the lash. I continue brushing the lash and shutting my lid slowly until I get the desired thickness and length, and then I move to the other eye.
Step 4
Finally I apply one coat of the L’Oreal Paris Double Extend Mascara on ONLY my top lashes. I do not use the priming side of this mascara, only the black or “step 2”. This is a tubing mascara which I think helps hold my lashes up and makes the mascara stay in place all day!
Step 5
Finally as soon as I am finished applying my mascara, I immediately blow dry my lashes. Yes I am serious, I take a blow dryer on the cool setting and dry my lashes! This allows the mascara to dry quickly and holds the lashes in place. As I am blow drying them, I also take my pointed finger and press the lashes up at the base, which helps to lift the lashes so they appear longer. I have inserted a picture of the final product below.
A little extra!
If you want to be even more EXTRA, you can also add a dark brown or black liner into your upper water line. This allows the lashes to blend at the root and helps them to look more voluminous. My favorite liner for this is the Marc Jacobs Highliner, because it provides 12-hour waterproof wear. I’ve also heard good things about the MAC Eye Kohl in Teddy.
